Bavarian single malt, finished in a Marsala cask
A fruity single malt with a Sicilian cask finish
Named after the Sicilian port city of Marsala, Marsala fortified wine was originally fortified to preserve it for transport by ship to England. ‘Fortification’ means that distilled alcohol is added to the grape must during fermentation, which stops the fermentation process and preserves the residual sweetness of the grapes. A Marsala that is still fortified in this way must be aged for at least one year (Marsala Fine), at least two years (Superiore), three years (Superiore Riserva), five or even ten years in oak or cherry wood casks. This finish variant demonstrates just how harmoniously the fruity notes of this fortified wine and a whisky made from the finest Bavarian barley can blend together.
After three years’ ageing in American white oak casks, the malt is transferred to casks that previously held Marsala. Through these casks, the wine’s fruity aromas are imparted to the malt whisky and blend with its malty notes.
Tasting & Recommendations
This blend tastes best neat at a serving temperature of 16 to 18°C, but also adds a special ‘twist’ to cocktails. In any case, it is important to store the bottles in a dark place and keep them upright!
